In 2024 there have been nearly 310,000 new cases of breast cancer in women and approximately 2790 in men. Breast cancer if caught early can be treated and significantly reduces mortality risk. In 2024 there have been approximately 42,000 deaths in women and 530 deaths in men. 66% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at early stages and the 5 yr survival is 98-99% if detected early.
USPSTF guidelines updated from 2016 recommend women aged 40-74 do yearly mammograms along with monthly self breast exams. After age 74 is recommended to discuss your yearly mammograms with your primary care doctor but you are still recommended to do monthly self breast exams and should you notice any changes you should discuss this with your primary doctor.
If you have a family history of BRCA gene mutation your risk of breast cancer increases by 45 to 85% in your lifetime. Annual breast imaging starts at age 25 with breast MRI and you should be evaluated by your OB/GYN or healthcare provider every 6 to 12 months. Annual breast MRIs are recommended age 25-29 and beginning at age 30 is recommended to proceed with breast MRI and mammography annually.
